Ever since I saw the chopping board video from the WoodWhisperer.com, I’ve seen them pop up all over the place.
It’s a beautiful board and a great project to hone your woodworking skills with. I’ve created a few for my family and they’ve all been greatly appreciated and heavily used.
Last week, I made one for my sister in law for her new home. She wanted one made out of cherry and walnut to fit the style of her new kitchen. I went thru the usual steps I usually take to build the board, but this time, instead of using my belt sander to flatten the board, I used (for the first time), my new Veritas bevel up smoother plane. The plane worked superbly well on the end grain surface, much to my delight. As you can see in the photo, the end grain has a wet look once it has been cleanly cut by the plane. This is the result straight from the smoother plus one coat of tung oil!
